Lipton Tennis Championship

The Miami Masters 2017 is a tennis tournament which is held annually in Key Biscayne (Key Biscayne) in Miami-Dade County Florida.
Masters is the second of the season for men and a Tier I event on the women's tour.

It is one of the most important tournaments of the season, and the proof is that it is one of the few (besides the Grand Slams) that have a fixture of more than 64 players, and extends the duration of one week. 96 men and 96 women took part in the individual mode, and 32 couples compete for the doubles tournament, over 12 days of competition, after the completion of the Australia Open and the Indian Wells Masters.

Founded in 1985, the tournament was originally called Lipton International Players Championships. In 2000, the sponsor change resulted in a new name for the event, which was renamed the Ericsson Open. Since 2002, the tournament was named for NASDAQ-100 Open, until 2007.

Due to the prestige and history of the tournament, and the fact that men's and women's competition, many consider the Miami Masters event as the sixth largest in the tours of the ATP and WTA, after the four Grand Slams and the Tennis Masters Cup, which takes place at the end of the season.

The tournament was founded in 1985 by former player Butch Buchholz. His original goal was to transform it into the first event of relevance of the season (the Australia Open was played in December at that time), to the point that he called the "Winter Wimbledon". Buchholz approached the ATP and WTA and offered to take charge of the awards, while they ceded a portion of the revenue from ticket sales and television rights in return gain the right to host the tournament for 15. Both associations accepted the offer.

The inaugural tournament was held in February 1985, in Laver's International Tennis Resort in Delray Beach. Buchholz hired Alan Mills, the Wimbledon referee, a judge of the competition. Also require the services of Ted Tinling, a well-known designer tennis environment from the 20s, as director of protocol. The amount of $ 1.8 million awarded in prizes, was surpassed only by Wimbledon and the U.S. Open at the time. Over time, the awards grew to reach 6 million.
